How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster. 1. Engine Speed Sensor It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors. If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40). It can be a bit difficult to test as there are different connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. audi car keys should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA! 3. Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them – just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms. 4. ECU Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down. The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They're cheap and easy to find particularly when they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an excellent choice. 5. Tachometer A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your Audi because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is spinning. When this sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components. The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard component across the Audi 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
